The Village of Belgium's welcome signs
identify the community’s Luxembourg heritage. The Grand Duchy of
Luxembourg is known as the
"Green Heart of Europe."
While the first immigrants came from Luxembourg, neighboring settlers
referred to this as "the Belgium area." The western part of Luxembourg
was detached and given to the new country of Belgium as part of a
treaty.
As
a result of our Luxembourg heritage, the Village of Belgium is featured
on the
Wisconsin Ethnic Settlement Trail
route. A Luxembourg Heritage Museum is located in Dacada north of the
Village. Annually, on the second Sunday in August, the
Luxembourg Fest
takes place, and an Antique
Farm Tractor Parade is held on the preceding Saturday.
Besides the Village’s ease of location off of I-43, (35 miles north
of Milwaukee along lake Michigan, which is a familiar midway point
between Chicago and Door County), beautiful
Harrington Beach State Park
lies immediately east of the
Village’s boundaries. Harrington Beach State Park offers year ‘round
recreational opportunities. A campsite is being developed within the
park. The spectacular Quarry Lake walk is a most worthy site!
Every season has its unique beauty along this walk and is historically
documented with markers.
The Adolph and Marie Ansay Welcome Center
is located in the lower parking area to
welcome guests.
Within a few miles, golf is available
at
Squires Country Club.
Golf is plentiful in Ozaukee County and the Belgium area is no
exception. Annually the Luxembourg Open takes place at
Squires Country Club.
Two dozen occupied stone houses exist
in the Town of Belgium. These houses were built between 1850-1880 and
charm the countryside. Other historic buildings include
St.Mary’s Catholic Church, Lake
Church,
built by the Luxembourg people in 1846. Nearby Luxembourg parishes
at Holy Cross and Dacada were built in 1845 and 1846 respectively.
Travelers from Europe find the Belgium area a definite stopping point
for history, genealogy, and the quiet beauty of the area.
Currently a Luxembourg Cultural center is being planned for placement
within the Village of Belgium. The Center is being developed in
cooperation with the country of Luxembourg, Europe and will be an
international destination point focusing on genealogy and cultural
exchange.
When you tour Ozaukee County, we hope you stop in and view our scenic
area and enjoy our hospitality of our citizens and many businesses -
both old and new.
